Of Roots and Routes

Of Roots and Routes (OR&R) is an independent platform for cultural production, education and creative collaboration, centred on celebrating, championing and amplifying women artists and female-led stories connected to Sudan.
 

Founded and led by artist and curator Frédérique Cifuentes, OR&R develops exhibitions, commissions, cultural programmes and partnerships across visual arts, moving image, music, architecture and design.

Through its activities, OR&R creates greater visibility, recognition and opportunities for women whose perspectives, experiences and creative practices contribute to the evolving cultural narratives of Sudan and its diaspora.
 

Building on the success of its first London exhibition in 2026, OR&R is evolving into an itinerant platform bringing together artists and creative practitioners through exhibitions, commissions, masterclasses and collaborations. Exploring how cultural narratives are shaped and shared through art, design and collectible objects, OR&R creates spaces for dialogue, connection and creative exchange, placing Sudanese heritage and contemporary creativity at the heart of its work.
 

In the context of the ongoing war in Sudan and the threats to cultural heritage and creative communities, OR&R advocates for the essential role of arts and culture in sustaining visibility, agency, connection and wellbeing.

 

Of Roots and Routes puts women’s voices at the centre of Sudan’s cultural landscape — creating new routes for their stories, ideas and creative practices to be seen, heard and shared internationally.
